About Cable Bay wine

our philosophy & process

At Cable Bay Vineyards, our philosophy centres on crafting premium, boutique wines that embody the unique character of the vineyard sites they originate from. Guided by a commitment to quality and sustainability with minimal intervention, our wines are a true reflection of the land and the care we put into every step of the process.

We believe that great wine starts in the vineyard. Our passionate team, led by the owner, focuses on ensuring that each grapevine is nurtured to its fullest potential. From vineyard management to the final pour, every decision we make is informed by our respect for the environment and the unique terroir of our regions.

We aim to produce wines that tell a story of their origin. All our vineyards are accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, ensuring that we meet rigorous environmental standards. Whether it’s the careful selection of fruitful, healthy canes at pruning time or the thoughtful crafting of each wine in the cellar, every stage of our process reflects a dedication to quality and authenticity.

our terroir

Cable Bay Vineyards grows premium fruit in two iconic New Zealand wine regions: Marlborough and Waiheke Island.

waiheke island

Situated in the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island is known for its unique microclimate, mineral-rich soils, and breathtaking landscapes. Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Auckland, this small island offers a warm, steady maritime climate, perfect for crafting vibrant, expressive wines.

Our Waiheke Island vineyards, established in 1998, are perched on steep slopes with clay-based, volcanic soils enriched by iron and manganese oxides. These elements add depth and texture to our wines, which include Chardonnay, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Viognier/Marsanne and Bordeaux blends. The extended ripening season, coupled with naturally low-yielding vines, ensures exceptional fruit quality, resulting in wines that are as distinct as the island itself.

awatere valley, marlborough

Located in Marlborough, the Awatere Valley is celebrated for its cool climate, long growing season and protective surrounding mountain ranges. Our vineyards here are entirely owned and managed by Cable Bay Vineyards to ensure we produce the best quality fruit possible.

Both our Cinders and Rocky Vineyard sites were planted in 1996 on naturally terraced land next to the Awatere River, and in close proximity to the ocean. The Awatere Valley’s alluvial gravel soils, formed from ancient riverbeds, lend a remarkable minerality to our wines. Together with careful viticulture, these vineyard qualities produce intensely aromatic, complex and textured wines.
