our story

Cable Bay Vineyards, one of New Zealand’s most renowned vineyards, is nestled on the stunning west coast of Waiheke Island. We produce premium, hand-crafted wines from estate-owned vineyards on Waiheke Island and in Marlborough—two of New Zealand’s most celebrated wine regions. Our journey began in 1998 with the planting of our first vineyard on Waiheke Island. By 2002, our very first Chardonnay won gold at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London, marking the beginning of our success.

History and values of Cable Bay

In 2007, we opened our winery, cellar door, and award-winning dining room, offering the finest in New Zealand hospitality, complete with breathtaking sea views. The estate also features expansive lawns, olive groves, organic gardens, and private event spaces.

Our growth continued in 2013 with the opening of The Verandah restaurant, known for its Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Around the same time, we expanded into Marlborough’s renowned Awatere Valley, acquiring additional vineyards. All of our vineyards are certified under New Zealand Sustainable Winegrowing, with select wines also certified organic by BioGro.

Views to Auckland

In 2015, we introduced organic kitchen gardens and a bokashi waste system to transform kitchen waste into nutrient-rich soil for growing our own vegetables, herbs, and microgreens. Since 2019, we’ve also been producing our own olive oil and honey, which our chefs use to create fresh, seasonal dishes that reflect our garden-to-plate philosophy.

In 2022, The Verandah restaurant underwent a redesign by Leigh Pryde, a project recognized by the Designers Institute of New Zealand.

Visitors to Cable Bay can not only enjoy world-class wines and gourmet cuisine but also explore our private art collection, featuring works from renowned New Zealand artists such as Phil Price, Virginia King, Con Dimopoulos, Anton Forde, Ray Haydon, Alan Pearson, and Linda Holloway.

Today, Cable Bay Vineyards is recognized as one of New Zealand’s top wine producers and a world-class destination, offering unforgettable experiences for wine lovers and travelers from around the globe.

sustainability

At Cable Bay Vineyards, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As an accredited member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, we use natural practices like composting and grazing sheep to nurture our vineyards. Our hand-harvested wines reflect our dedication to premium, sustainable winemaking, ensuring quality and care in every bottle.

To reduce food waste in our kitchens , we ensure every part of an ingredient is utilized, whether in seasonings, dressings, preserves, or staff meals. Our organic produce is grown using nutrient-rich compost made from food scraps, green waste, and recycled paper, processed through worm farms, bokashi, and composting systems. This closed-loop cycle at our Waiheke Island site helps divert waste from landfills and enriches our gardens and vineyards, supporting the growth of premium produce and grapes.
