LOUKAS & CAROLINE PETROU

Cable Bay Owners

Loukas and his wife Caroline work to ensure Cable Bay continues delivering the award winning wines and hospitality service it is renowned for, whilst continually growing and improving the company. They bought the business in September 2012 and are closely involved in day to day operations. Their vision is to create the best hospitality experience in New Zealand.


CHLOE SOMERSET

Winemaker

With 15 vintages under her belt, Chloe’s wealth of experience in the winery spans continents, including Canada, United States, Greece, France, Australia and New Zealand. Chloe sought experience in boutique vineyards where wine quality was inspiring, and commitment to caring for their land was paramount.

In Santorini, Chloe stepped back in time and experienced her first ‘Old World’ vintage with one of Greece’s most famous winemakers, Haridimos Hatzidakis. Burgundy greats, Domaine de Montille and Domaine Chandon de Briailles are where she fostered a true appreciation and understanding of terroir – which she affectionately calls her ‘epiphany moments’! Chloe also spent a few years in Australia, working for Brokenwood Wines in the Hunter Valley alongside one of Australia’s most acclaimed winemakers, PJ Charteris and Australian icon Iain Riggs; followed by an assistant winemaking role at Len Evan’s Tower Estate, with top Australian winemaker, Samantha Connew.

Returning to New Zealand, Chloe honed her craft working alongside Central Otago pioneer, Rudi Bauer at Quartz Reef before heading to Waiheke Island to join Cable Bay Vineyards in January 2013. As Winemaker at Cable Bay, Chloe’s passion lies in the evocative power of wine to capture a memory and to tell the story of its origin. Her approach to making wine is to nurture its true personality, revealing the complete journey from grape to glass, and boldly bottling the terroir’s thumbprint to make it distinctively expressive.

NICK PETT

Assistant Winemaker

Nick joined Cable Bay in January 2015 and splits his time between working hands-on in the vineyard and winery, helping to deliver Cable Bay’s award-winning wines. As one of our most active team members, Nick is never far away from a physical challenge of some description; from climbing mountains to adventure racing.

Before coming to Cable Bay, Nick followed harvests between the northern and southern hemispheres for several years to earn his stripes.

BART ARNST

Marlborough Vineyard Consultant

Bart Arnst, of Bart Arnst Viticultural Consultancy Ltd oversees our Marlborough vineyards. As one of New Zealand’s leading organic and bio-dynamic viticulturists, Bart brings more than 30 years expertise and experience. He is also a Consultant to the Organic Focus Vineyard Project and is supporting Cable Bay as it converts its Cinders Vineyard in Marlborough to organics. Bart is a founding member of Organic Winegrowers NZ and was the program coordinator for the highly successful Organic and Biodynamic Wine Conference held in 2015, and to be repeated in 2017.



MAX LARBIOSE

Head Chef

Our talented head chef, Max Larboise trained in a Michelin starred restaurant in France and draws on his classical background throughout the menu, along with the fusion flavours he was enjoyed during his extensive travels around Australia, Europe and Asia. There is an unmistakeable French influence in the kitchen, which he elegantly combines with modern New Zealand cuisine.

Max’s culinary creations proudly express the very best of Cable Bay’s organic kitchen gardens. Max takes inspiration from Waiheke’s terroir, our stunning wines and Auckland’s flourishing food culture to produce cuisine that champions balance and flavour above all.



JAMES CUTFIELD

Sales & Marketing Manager

James is responsible for the Sales and Marketing of Cable Bay wines in New Zealand and our expanding export markets. He found a love of wine whilst working in vineyards as a teenager. Since then he has gained a Masters Degree in Wine Business from the University of Adelaide and worked in both the domestic and export markets for numerous New Zealand wineries. In his time off James loves to travel (especially to wine regions) and spend time with friends and family. James is keen on a myriad of sports and excels at none.

BERNICE HUMPHREY

Finance & Business Manager

Bernice joined Cable Bay in January 2013 and is responsible for the financial management of facility, vineyard & winery costing. She is renowned for her abilities in simplifying and organising systems – which is a highly valued asset at our fast-growing company! Originally from Canada, Bernice has a broad experience base as a Chartered Accountant both in New Zealand and overseas, from public accounting and state owned enterprises to small businesses.


SAM THEED

Waiheke Vineyard Consultant and Manager

Sam Theed, of Vingro Ltd manages our Waiheke Island vineyards, bringing more than 15 years of local management experience. As the leading viticulturist on the island, Sam employs traditional vineyard techniques.

Right from winter pruning through to hand harvesting a strong emphasis is put on sustainability and vine care within all vineyard practises, giving the grapes the best possible opportunity to arrive at the winery door in top condition. With a rural New Zealand upbringing and background and arriving at Waiheke Island post travels, Sam’s love of working on the land, practical experience and a desire to produce a high quality product is why he and Cable Bay have had such a strong relationship for 15 years.

 


CAROL SCHOFIELD

Administration Manager

Carol Schofield has been with Cable Bay since 2005, and her first role involved selling wine from our shed, long before our stunning building was forged. She subsequently has a wealth of knowledge and experience across the business – if there’s something Carol doesn’t know about Cable Bay, it isn’t worth knowing! In her current role as Office Manager, she provides support to the Finance & Business Manager and coordinates delivery of wine orders for both local and export markets.
